What You Should Know About Treating Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder that causes mood .disregulation.  People suffering from it experience deep depressions and periods of mania.  During the manias – they may have grandiose ideas, experience increased energy, and need less sleep, just to name a few possible symptoms.  Luckily, the disorder can be managed with treatment – especially medications.

The most common medications for bipolar disorder are mood stabilizers.  These even out the highs and lows mood swings people experience.  Lithium is probably the most common mood stabilizer.  It’s very strong however and some people can’t tolerate it.  For those people, luckily there are many other options.  Depakote, Lamictal, and Topamax are just a few.

Antipsychotics are also often used to treat bipolar disorder.  During manic episodes, hallucinations can occur.  Antipsychotics can help control these and can also be used to help keep anxiety under control.  One antipsychotic, Seroquel, is well known as also being used as a medication to help people sleep.  Some other com,on antipsychotics are Zyprexa and Saphris.

Antidepressants are sometimes used in the treatment of bipolar disorder but must be used with care.  They have been shown to cause mania in some people or at too high a dosage.  There are too many antidepressants and kinds of antidepressants to even begin to list here!  Older types do have some pretty restrictive food issues, while newer ones do not.

In addition to medication, therapy can help people deal with the disorder as well.  Learning coping skills and signs of an episode beginning .  Many therapists are familiar with treating clients suffering from bipolar disorder and have many ideas to help.  Bipolar disorder is a serious disease but with proper management – it can be well controlled and those with it can lead a very normal and happy life.
