How Frequently Should You Wash Your Bedsheets? And Why You Should Wash Your Sheets

A bedroom is considered one of the safe spaces in the houses, a space that can be individualistic and encompass all the elements of a family or the individual. It can reflect the style of the person who lives in this space and can be seen as his or her identity as well.

This is why it’s important to use the right elements and things in the room that can distinguish your style. In this capacity, everything starting from bed sheets, curtains, pillow covers, rugs, wall hangings, portraits etc can all be designed and chosen in a way that it translates the user’s style and preference. Even the simplest of things can make a world of difference in the bedroom.

When it comes to bed sheets, they are not just a necessity but also a symbol of comfort and elegance. Keeping the bed protected, covered and decorated with the use of a bed sheet can help in transcending the bedroom and take it to the next level. But as much as using a bedsheet is important, so is the proper maintenance of them.

Bed sheets can easily be a host of bacterias and germs as they are used day in and day out by more than one person and for days together. This can cause the bed sheet to accumulate germs and bacterias on a regular basis. This is why it is important to wash the bed sheets as frequently as possible, just as one would with towels and other beddings.

Maintaining Bed Sheets

Bed sheets are sprawled across the beds and are most probably used by more than one person at a time. Some of the users may lie with their clothes on the back which were worn outside, transferring all the germs and dirt from the outside onto the sheets.

Humans also tend to perspire more than usual in the summer even in the nights. Higher temperatures can cause people to sweat and this may accumulate germs later on as well. Drooling is another common occurrence as one sleeps.

Most people tend to drool on the sheets and pillow covers when they sleep which again is a host to germs and bacterias. Babies and kids are hot spots for transmitting these germs and bacterias back and forth as they can play excellent conductors of both germs and dirt. Kids who engage in playtime on the bed can bring around much dirt and germs on the sheet and so do babies with their diapers.

How often should you wash sheets?

Bed sheets should be typically treated as towels and other bathroom accessories. It must be washed at least once a week or preferably twice a week to maintain the best hygiene. If there are more than one users of the bed sheet and if they tend to use the area for more than just night time sleep, it is recommended to wash the bed sheets at least 2 times per week to avoid any infection and germ build up.

For those who have young kids and infants using the bed sheet, it is recommended to wash the sheets twice a week in warm water with a disinfectant to help kill germs and make a safer environment for the kids and babies. When washing sheets, ensure you use a mild detergent that does not fade out the colours of the sheets. Never use bleach on the sheets as the bleach tends to discolor them giving the sheets a worn-out and old appearance.
