MAIN COMPONENTS OF THE SET UP
TURBOCHARGER
The turbocharger is turbine driven equipment. Turbochargers are driven by the engine’s exhaust
gases and are used to generate electricity. The generated power is used as power supply to
thermoelectric cooling system.
COMPRESSOR
The compressor raises the pressure and temperature of the incoming vapour. There are many types
of compressors. Normally a reciprocating compressor is used in the vapour compression system.
CONDENSER
A condenser is a device in the vapour compression system where the vapour is converted to a
liquid at constant pressure. A condenser is essentially a heat exchanger where the vapour loses
heat under constant pressure,
CAPILLARY TUBE
In this device, the high pressure liquid is converted into a low pressure and low temperature sub-
cooled liquid. Capillary tube has very small diameter. For effective throttling, the working fluid
should be of high pressure liquid state.
EVAPORATOR
Evaporator is a device where the liquid from expansion valve absorbs heat and turns into vapour.
In the evaporator, the working substance absorbs heat from the surroundings. To enhance the heat
transfer rate, fins are attached to the evaporator.
CONCLUSION
The conventional air conditioning system utilizes the power from the engine and reduces the
mileage. The air conditioner powered by engine exhaust utilizes the kinetic energy of the exhaust
to run the compressor, offers a better utilization of exhaust energy. The temperature is lowered
along with the increase in the mileage.
FUTURE ENHANCEMENTS
Adsorption refrigeration is an emerging technology and can replace the vapour compression
system and the vapour absorption system; The compressor should be well insulated so as to reduce
the heat losses. The refrigerant entering the evaporator has to be fully converted into liquid so that
maximum efficiency is achieved. Vane type compressor, Trochoidal type compressors are some of
the advances in the compressor technologies.
