SpongeBoy Ahoy to SpongeBob SquarePants

Cartoons have been a part of many people’s lives. Every childhood memories have experienced watching it and entertained us in any way. Stephen Hillenburg who was a marine biologist and works for Nickelodeon as an animator has created an American animated television series called SpongeBob SquarePants. The ideas were from the series of an unpublished educational comic book entitled The Intertidal Zone, which he created in 1989. He developed the character of SpongeBob SquarePants in 1996, which supposed to be named as SpongeBoy for the series SpongeBoy Ahoy! and trademarked as SpongeBob SquarePants now. One of the significant people for this series was Tom Kenny. He worked with him to voice for SpongeBob when Rocko’s Modern Life has ended on November 24, 1996, having four seasons and 52 episodes in total. Due to that, much of its staff were reassembled for SpongeBob SquarePants wherein the creative director of Rocko’s was Hillenburg himself too.

The animated television series sits in the underwater city called Bikini Bottom which was named after Bikini Atoll, a coral reef in the Pacific Ocean. Some have named this place as the real-world location of Bikini Bottom.

Nickelodeon aired SpongeBob SquarePants on May 1, 1999, in the United States for its preview series.  On July 17, 1999, series officially premiered which was a great success with highest rate series ever air on Nickelodeon. As of 2015, its franchise has generated $12 billion merchandise revenue for the company.

The series received outstanding achievements from various awards, including 12 Kids’ Choice Awards, eight Golden Reel Awards, two Emmy Awards, six Annie Awards, and two BAFTA Children’s Awards.

Major characters in this series are Gary, Mrs. Puff, Squidward, Patrick, SpongeBob, Sandy, Pearl, Mr. Krabs, and Plankton. On its regular episodes, it runs for 11 minutes only. For special episodes, it takes about 22 minutes.
