Even the Romans used Acronyms

Acronymy has its roots deep in history, but it’s only in the last century that it has been widely used and written about. Initialisms, another form of Acronyms was used by the Romans indeed they even used one to describe the Roman Empire SPQR (Senatus Populusque Romanus).

For centuries, the Church has used the inscription INRI over the crucifix, Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, translated as “Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews”. Latin has been used long before English as a form of Acronyms and is still used today, for example, AM,( ante meridiem) and of course PM (post meridiem) the same applies to AD and BC even the widely used OK dates back to the nineteenth century.
