Song of the Day- Day 1 – The Animals – House of the rising Sun

I am taking inspiration from Kristineponti and posting my song of the day. I love her taste in music and a lot of it mirrors mine but I want to try inspiring others with some slightly different songs that are favourites of mine.

The first song for this series is :

The Animals – the house of the rising sun

The house of the rising sun was recorded and released in 1964 by the Animals but the actual author of the song is unknown as it is an old folk song that has been changed and altered many times over.

The animals version was very well received and is one of my all time favourite songs. It charted at number 1 in the uk and the US in 1964 and also re entered the UK charts in 1972 at number 25 and  number 11 in 1982.

Here are the lyrics:

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it’s been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God, I know I’m one

My mother was a tailor
She sewed my new blue jeans
My father was a gamblin’ man
Down in New Orleans

Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and trunk
And the only time he’s satisfied
Is when he’s on a drunk

[Organ Solo]

Oh mother, tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun

Well, I got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I’m goin’ back to New Orleans
To wear that ball and chain

Well, there is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it’s been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God, I know I’m one

Do you know this song? If so what do you think of it ? I love music from the 60s and 70s 🙂
